NUMBER OF PI ( π )
Pi ( π ) is the irrational number. Usually, pi is used to compute the area of a circle. Pi is discovered by many mathematicians : Archimedes, Ptolemy, Liu Hui and the father and son tandem of Tsu Chung-Chih and Tsu Keng-Chih, etc.
They found kind of approximation. In the third century AD, Archimedes found that of the value of pi in three decimal places and Ptolemy computed for four decimal places. But after that, for 1450 years, no greater accuracy was achieved in the Western world.
Then, the Chinese made great strides forward in computing pi. Example, in the third century AD, Liu Hui thus calculated a value of pi of 3,14159. Next, in the 5th century AD, the father and son tandem of Tsu Chung-Chih and Tsu Keng-Chih found that pi used to six decimal places. They gave 3,1415926 < π < 3,1415927.
Besides that, in Europe the calculation of pi by Adriaen Anthoniszoon only gave 3,14929 , an approximate value extending to seven places, which still fell three short of the value found by the Tsu family.
